Location of OperationsHorizon Drilling operates in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.  

General Summary of Position The Floorhand position is deemed to be a "Safety Sensitive" position due to the proximity of heavy industrial machinery. The Floorhand, also called Roughneck, is one of the starting positions on the drilling crew. The Floorhand assists the other crew members in their day-to-day duties and is responsible for keeping the rig site clean and performing basic maintenance. Assisting in the repair and maintenance of rig equipment will be a key responsibility of this role and you will work all around the rig and rig floor to perform these daily duties. In this role, you’re required to learn how to use wrench-like tongs and be able to connect and disconnect drill pipe during the tripping-in/tripping-out and drill ahead process.

Position is full-time seasonal position. Seasonal work is based on operational requirements, project schedules, weather and environmental conditions and other factors outside our control.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Following and enforcing relevant policies, regulations and standards.
  • Operation and maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Effectively assist other members of the crew.
  • Understanding the job scope, potential hazards, rules and regulations and equipment considerations.
  • Supporting Horizon’s core values in all aspects of day-to-day operations and decision-making.
  • Ensure the Drill floor is scrubbed and clean while drilling is taking place.
  • Using wrench-like tongs to connect and disconnect the drill pipe during the tripping-in/tripping-out process, as well as drilling process.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on equipment (as per maintenance manual).
  • Assist in running casing into a well after it has been drilled.
  • Assist in moving the rig, rigging up and rigging out.
  • Participate in all safety initiatives & meetings.

  • Ability to work safely and plan.
  • Strong Leadership skill.
  • Ability to work in a team setting.
  • Strong communication skills and good organizational skills.
  • Strong Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to judge distance and spatial relationships.

Experience:

  • Previous rig experience is considered an asset.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Valid H2S Alive Certification and CSO Certification.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation to and from the site.

Safety and Physical Demands:

Working on a drilling rig comes with many physical demands and a commitment to a safe work environment.  A rig worker is exposed to all weather conditions, long hours and rigorous physical demands.   Horizon Drilling is committed to ensuring rig workers meet these physical demands by having each employee complete a substance screening and strength and mobility test before them being hired.   Rig workers should be able to successfully lift 75 lbs., work 12-hour shift in extreme weather conditions, and can work in a team environment.  Horizon Drilling is dedicated to the continuous improvement of safety.
